Tourists Robbed on Costa Rica Beach, $700,000 in Bitcoin Stolen

Sometimes you come across a story, that is kinda scary. A group of Israeli tourists was robbed of $700,000 in Bitcoin on a beach in Costa Rica. The 11 tourists were on Santa Teresa de Cóbano beach in Puntarenas when eight armed men attacked them.

Possible Involvement of an Insider

The robbers arrived in two luxury cars, overpowered a security guard, and tied up the tourists. They forced the group to hand over their valuables and $700k in Bitcoin. This was reported by the Costa Rican authorities from the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ).

Authorities suspect the robbers have police experience. Security footage shows some of the perpetrators wearing police uniforms. This fuels suspicion that someone who knew the tourists tipped off the robbers about their Bitcoin holdings.

Similar Cases Worldwide

This robbery comes shortly after a similar incident in Ukraine. A Moroccan man was murdered for his Bitcoin. The perpetrators forced him to transfer $170,000 in Bitcoin before killing him. Four suspects have since been arrested for kidnapping and murder.

If it turns out that the police were involved in the Costa Rica robbery, it wouldn’t be the first time. In 2021, two police officers in Vietnam were arrested for stealing $1.63 million in Bitcoin after staging an accident.

This incident highlights the dangers of holding large amounts of cryptocurrency, especially when criminals know how to access it. Costa Rican authorities continue to investigate the case.

Final Words

Holding large sums of cryptocurrency can be risky, as this case shows. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and secure your assets. I would advise you to avoid telling people how much cryptocurrency you own. And make sure to always store your crypto in ways that are hard to access.
