Vitalik Buterin: Who Is the Man Behind Ethereum?

September 12, 2019
Vitalik Buterin explained: Bitcoin Magazine, the Ethereum whitepaper, the DAO fork, the Merge, and why he still sets the agenda in 2026.

Vitalik Buterin is the co-founder of Ethereum, the blockchain that made smart contracts, DeFi, NFTs and most crypto airdrops possible. He wrote the Ethereum whitepaper at 19, launched the network at 21, and still steers its roadmap at 32. Unlike most founders in this series, he does not sell products, run an exchange or pump a token. He writes long posts about cryptography, and the whole industry reads them.

This profile covers how a Russian-Canadian teenager built the second largest crypto network, why his words still move markets, and what I think after nine years of building on his chain.

From Kolomna to Bitcoin Magazine

Buterin was born in Kolomna, Russia, in January 1994. His family moved to Canada when he was six. Teachers spotted early that he could do three-digit sums in his head at twice the speed of his classmates, and he was placed in a gifted program in Toronto.

His father introduced him to Bitcoin at 17. He started writing for a Bitcoin forum for five bitcoin per article, then co-founded Bitcoin Magazine in 2011. That job sent him around the world to meet developers, and the trip convinced him Bitcoin was too limited.

In late 2013 he published the Ethereum whitepaper. The pitch was simple. Bitcoin can move money. A blockchain with a built-in programming language can run any application. He received a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship in 2014, dropped out of the University of Waterloo, and went all in.

Creating Ethereum

The Ethereum crowdsale ran in the summer of 2014 and raised around 31,000 bitcoin, worth roughly $18 million at the time. The network went live in July 2015. Within two years it hosted the entire ICO boom, and almost every token from that era was an ERC-20 on Ethereum. Our first airdrops in 2017 were all Ethereum tokens, and that is still mostly true today. Ethereum explained covers the basics if you are new, and smart contracts explained covers the part that made it all work.

The first big test came in 2016. The DAO, a crowdfunded investment vehicle on Ethereum, was drained of about $60 million. Buterin backed a hard fork to reverse the hack. The community split, and Ethereum Classic was born. It remains the most debated decision of his career.

The second big test was the Merge in September 2022. Ethereum switched from mining to proof of stake, cutting energy use by over 99%. It was the largest live upgrade in crypto history and it worked. The Dencun upgrade in 2024 and Fusaka in late 2025 followed, each making Layer 2 transactions cheaper.

Why Vitalik still moves markets

Buterin has no marketing team and no token to shill. His influence comes from three places.

First, the roadmap. When he publishes a post on scaling, privacy or account abstraction, every Ethereum developer adjusts. His January 2026 post declaring the year Ethereum “takes back lost ground” on self-sovereignty set the agenda for the whole Layer 1 and wallet ecosystem. A browse of our Ethereum coverage shows how often his posts become the week’s story.

Second, his wallet. Buterin holds a large ETH position from the 2014 presale. When he sends ETH to an exchange, on-chain trackers flag it within minutes and ETH often dips. Most of those sales fund the Ethereum Foundation or charity, but the market reacts before it reads the explanation.

Third, his endorsements, or lack of them. When ETH treasury companies like BitMine piled in during 2025, Tom Lee publicly complained that Buterin stayed neutral. I covered that wave in Tom Lee is buying Ethereum like crazy. Buterin’s silence was the story. He does not bless winners.

Vitalik’s projects and causes

Beyond Ethereum itself, here is where his time goes:

  • The Ethereum Foundation, which he co-founded in Switzerland and still influences, even after handing daily leadership to co-executive directors in 2025
  • Privacy research, including his 2026 series on program obfuscation and the Kohaku wallet privacy effort
  • Philanthropy, from $2.4 million to anti-aging research in 2018 to over $1 billion in SHIB donated to Indian Covid relief in 2021, plus support for Ukraine after 2022
  • Zuzalu and pop-up cities, his experiments in temporary communities for builders
  • Montenegro, which granted him citizenship in 2022

Track record: what he got right and wrong

The hits are obvious. Ethereum won the smart contract race. DeFi, NFTs, stablecoins and airdrops all run on it or its Layer 2s. The Merge shipped. Buterin also called the ICO bubble a bubble while it was happening, and warned about meme coin excess in 2024 long before the crash.

The misses are subtler. The DAO fork set a precedent that still haunts the “code is law” crowd. Sharding was promised for years and quietly replaced by rollups. Gas fees during the 2021 NFT mania made Ethereum unusable for retail and handed Solana a generation of users. And his Layer 2 strategy created a fragmented ecosystem that even he now says needs to specialize or consolidate.

The criticism

Critics fall into three groups.

Bitcoin maximalists say proof of stake made Ethereum a corporate chain, and that the DAO fork proved it was never immutable.

Solana and Base builders say he moved too slowly. While he wrote essays, competitors shipped cheap chains and took the retail flow.

Ethereum insiders say the opposite. They worry he changes direction too often, from sharding to rollups to native rollups to privacy, and that the Foundation lost focus during 2024 and 2025. The 2025 leadership reshuffle was a direct answer to that pressure.

None of these camps accuse him of dishonesty. In an industry full of founders who lie for a living, that is rare.

Should beginners follow Vitalik?

Yes, but not for trades. His posts will not tell you when to buy ETH. They tell you what Ethereum will look like in three years, which matters if you farm airdrops or build. When he flags a category as important, the airdrops follow. Layer 2s, restaking, account abstraction and privacy all showed up in his writing before they showed up in your wallet.

Watch his wallet too. His ETH transfers are a reliable short-term dip signal, even when the reason is boring.

My Take

I bought my first ETH at $7 in 2016. I did not fully understand Vitalik’s vision then. I understood it a year later when I launched AirdropAlert and realized that nearly every airdrop I listed was an Ethereum token. He built the rails my business runs on. I have never had a conversation with him, and that is fine. His work speaks louder than a handshake.

I traded through the 2021 gas wars, paying hundreds of dollars to mint NFTs on his chain. I cursed him plenty. Then I watched him fix it, upgrade by upgrade, without ever becoming a salesman. That restraint is the point. He is the one OG in this series who could have sold out a hundred times and never did.

He is not a trader’s KOL. He is the closest thing crypto has to an engineer with a conscience. If you only follow one person in this series for the long term, follow him. If you want fireworks, my Justin Sun profile is the other end of the spectrum.

Rewriting a 2019 post into a 2026 profile took a full afternoon of reading Vitalik essays, which is not a small ask. If it helped, support us by trading on OKX or Bybit through our links. Costs you nothing, keeps us writing.

Final Words

Vitalik Buterin turned a teenager’s whitepaper into the settlement layer for most of crypto. Eleven years after launch, he is still writing the roadmap and still declining to pick winners. That is why his influence outlasts every cycle.

Ethereum exists because Bitcoin came first. If you want the origin story, read who is Satoshi Nakamoto and how many bitcoin Satoshi owns. Both remain the biggest unanswered questions in crypto.
