Zcash NU7 Lands November 5: Faster Blocks, Frozen Sprout Coins, and Why I Have No ZEC Trade On

October 25, 2026
Faster blocks, 22,000 ZEC about to freeze, ETF money back in, and a trader explaining why no position is the trade this week.

Zcash NU7 activates on mainnet around November 5, 2026, at block 3,543,405. The upgrade cuts block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, and it stops version 4 transactions. That second part matters, because v4 is the only format that can spend coins from the old Sprout shielded pool. Roughly 22,000 ZEC sit in that pool today. Once NU7 goes live, those coins stop moving.

Eleven days out, ZEC trades near $1,200, down about 25% from where it sat a month ago. Meanwhile, money is flowing back into the ETFs. I’ll cover the upgrade, the flows, and my own trading plan. Spoiler: the plan is to do nothing.

What Zcash NU7 Actually Changes

NU7 is the seventh network upgrade in Zcash’s history. On October 20, core developer Sean Bowe proposed the mainnet activation height, and the Zcash Foundation followed with Zebra 7.0.0, the node release that carries NU7 support. Node operators need to upgrade before the activation block.

Three changes stand out for a holder or trader.

First, speed. Blocks arrive every 25 seconds instead of every 75. Payments confirm three times faster, which is the headline most people will see.

Second, issuance. The upgrade adjusts how new ZEC enters circulation while keeping the halving schedule intact. So the supply curve traders have modelled does not break.

Third, and this is the one that bites, ZIP 2003. The proposal from Electric Coin Company’s Daira-Emma Hopwood disables version 4 transactions from NU7 onward. We flagged this risk in our September roundup when NU7 was still a plan. Now it has a block height.

The Sprout Pool Freeze Explained

Sprout was the original shielded pool when Zcash launched in 2016. Sapling replaced it in 2018, and Orchard replaced Sapling in 2022. New deposits into Sprout stopped years ago. Only withdrawals remained, and those withdrawals need a v4 transaction.

After NU7, v4 transactions are invalid. As a result, any ZEC still inside Sprout becomes unspendable, even if you hold the keys. Nothing gets burned, and the coins stay counted in the issued supply. However, no restore mechanism is scheduled in any NU7 spec. “Maybe later” is the official position.

As of October 17, the pool held about 22,309 ZEC. At today’s price that is roughly $27 million of coins with a two-week deadline. Most of it belongs to wallets nobody has opened in years.

If you bought Zcash before 2019 and still have an old wallet.dat, check it now. The Argos tool sweeps Sprout funds into Sapling, and the exit exposes the amount through public pool accounting. That is an acceptable trade-off compared to losing the coins. Our breakdown of why Zcash is the king of anonymous coins covers how the shielded pools fit together if the names confuse you.

Nobody who bought ZEC this year is affected. Exchange balances, transparent addresses, Sapling and Orchard funds all keep working.

ETF Money Came Back This Week

The price chart looks tired, yet the fund flows tell a different story. ZEC investment products took in about $41 million over the past trading week. That ended three straight weeks of outflows. Monday opened with a $10 million withdrawal, then every day from Tuesday to Friday printed an inflow. Grayscale’s ZCSH alone pulled $15 million on its best day.

Competition for that money is growing. The Winklevoss twins filed an S-1 on October 6 for a spot Zcash ETF under the ticker WINK. Gemini would custody the coins, the fee is 0.25%, and Winklevoss Capital signalled interest in buying up to $100 million of shares at launch. Bitwise has its own filing pending. Three issuers chasing one privacy coin was unthinkable two years ago.

One more technical upgrade is coming from outside the Zcash core team. On October 19, Zakura, a newer Zcash node implementation, proposed giving every ZEC swap through NEAR Intents its own viewing key. The fix closes a gap where a future quantum computer could link private ZEC swaps to a wallet through a posted refund address. Compatible wallets could ship the feature within weeks.

ZEC Price Into the Upgrade

The last month has been a round trip of pain for leveraged longs. ZEC traded above $1,600 in late September. Then CPI week knocked it down 15%, which is the move I covered in the Zcash 1000 post. It bounced, slid again to about $1,085 last weekend, and then ripped 25% to $1,364 by Tuesday. Since then it has bled back to the low $1,200s.

Saturday’s broader selloff did not help. Bitcoin dipped below $80,000 after reports that the US is evacuating staff across the Middle East, and ZEC dropped to $1,150 before recovering. Open interest in ZEC futures sits near $2.25 billion, and futures volume runs around 15 times spot volume. In other words, this chart is driven by leverage right now, not by patient buyers.

Levels I watch: $1,085 is the local low, and $1,000 remains the big floor everyone trades against. Overhead, the 50-day average near $1,250 rejected the bounce twice. Then comes the $1,364 high from Tuesday, and $1,443 above that.

My Trade: No Position Is a Trade Too

Here is the honest recap. In the Zcash 1000 post I laid out a long with a stop just under the point of interest. ZEC dipped into that zone last weekend, barely tagged the stop, and took me out for a one R loss. Within three days, it was up 15% without me. That stings, but it is the cost of using stops. The alternative is holding a loser with no exit.

Right now I have no ZEC trade running. Not long, not short. The structure is not clean enough in either direction, and I refuse to force an entry just because an upgrade date is circled on the calendar. Upgrades get priced in early more often than people think.

So I wait. No position is a trade too. You are protecting capital for the move where the odds are actually on your side. Think of it like folding a marginal hand before the flop. It costs nothing, and it keeps your stack intact for a better spot. If ZEC builds a base above $1,085 and reclaims the 50-day, there is a long to plan. If it loses $1,000 on a daily close, the picture changes completely.

Spot is a separate bucket. My ZEC DCA runs on its own schedule and does not react to a stopped trade.

Final Words

Zcash NU7 arrives on November 5 with faster blocks and a Sprout pool that locks for good. The upgrade is positive for the network, and the ETF flows turning green this week suggest the institutional bid has not left. Still, a 25% drawdown with $2.25 billion of leverage attached is not a chart I need to trade today.

My last ZEC trade stopped out, then ran without me. Fine. The next one will be planned from better structure, not from a calendar date. Until then, I keep DCAing spot, I keep watching the ZCAT corner of the ecosystem, and I keep my trading capital out of harm’s way. Check those old wallets before the fifth.

FAQ

When does Zcash NU7 activate?

NU7 activates on mainnet at block 3,543,405, expected around November 5, 2026. Zebra 7.0.0 is the node release that supports it.

What does NU7 change on Zcash?

Block time drops from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, issuance is adjusted without changing the halving schedule, and version 4 transactions are disabled.

Will NU7 freeze my ZEC?

Only ZEC held in the legacy Sprout shielded pool, which held about 22,309 ZEC in mid October. Exchange balances, transparent addresses, Sapling and Orchard funds are unaffected.

Can Sprout funds be recovered after NU7?

The coins are not burned, and ZIP 2003 leaves the door open to a future restore. However, no restore mechanism is currently scheduled, so holders should move Sprout funds before activation.

Is there a Zcash ETF?

Yes. Grayscale’s ZCSH trades on NYSE Arca. Winklevoss Asset Services filed for a second spot ETF, WINK, on October 6, and Bitwise has a filing pending.

What is the ZEC price before NU7?

Around $1,200 on October 25, about 25% below its late September level, with ETF products posting roughly $41 million of weekly inflows.
