Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2016 as a fork of Bitcoin, with the same 21 million supply cap but one crucial addition: shielded transactions that hide the sender, receiver, and amount using zero-knowledge proofs. We first published this guide in 2019, when ZEC was a forgotten mid-cap. Seven years later the coin sits in the top 10, so consider this the full rewrite it earned.
Quick disclosure before the deep dive: I hold ZEC and have been DCAing into it through this run. Now let’s see whether the king still deserves the crown.
What Is Zcash?
Zcash is digital cash with a privacy switch. Every transaction settles on its own proof-of-work blockchain, mined like Bitcoin, capped at 21 million coins like Bitcoin. The difference sits in the address types. Transparent addresses work exactly like Bitcoin’s, fully public. Shielded addresses encrypt everything, so the blockchain confirms the transaction is valid without revealing who paid whom or how much.
That optional design is the whole thesis. Auditable when you want it, invisible when you need it. Blocks arrive every 75 seconds, and fees on shielded transactions cost a fraction of a cent.
From Science Project to Top-10 Coin
The project launched in October 2016, built by cryptographers from Johns Hopkins, MIT, and UC Berkeley. No ICO, no premine. Founder Zooko Wilcox and the Electric Coin Company ran development for years, funded by a slice of the block reward.
The structure looks very different in 2026. The entire ECC engineering team left in January to form the independent Zcash Open Development Lab, which now builds the protocol and the Zodl wallet. Zooko moved on to co-found Shielded Labs, another core contributor. Add the Zcash Foundation and a few smaller teams, and no single company controls Zcash anymore. For a privacy coin, that decentralization is a feature.
The road here was ugly, though. Exchanges purged privacy coins through 2024, ZEC bled to double digits, and plenty of people wrote the obituary. Then late 2025 flipped everything: a monster rally carried Zcash into the top 10, and it even flipped HYPE by market cap in September 2026. We covered the turn as it happened in our privacy comeback breakdown.
How Zcash Works: zk-SNARKs Explained Simply
The technology behind the curtain is called a zk-SNARK, short for zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive argument of knowledge. Strip away the jargon and it does one thing: it proves a statement is true without revealing the underlying data. Applied to money, that means proving “this transaction is valid and creates no coins out of thin air” while the amounts and addresses stay encrypted.
Roughly 30% of all ZEC now sits in shielded pools, the highest share in the coin’s history. People use the privacy instead of just trading the ticker, and that on-chain adoption is what separates this rally from the last one.
Here’s how Zcash stacks up against its parent chain today:
| Bitcoin | Zcash | |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | All transactions public | Shielded transactions hide sender, receiver, amount |
| Supply cap | 21 million | 21 million |
| Block time | 10 minutes | 75 seconds |
| Typical fee | Several dollars | Under a cent |
| Auditability | Always public | Selective, via viewing keys |
The Orchard Bug and Ironwood: Zcash’s 2026 Stress Test
No honest 2026 guide skips this chapter. In May, a Shielded Labs researcher found a flaw in the proof circuit of Orchard, the main shielded pool. In theory, an attacker could have minted counterfeit ZEC without anyone detecting it. No evidence ever surfaced that someone exploited it, but the ecosystem chose the nuclear option anyway: fix it fast, then replace the pool entirely.
The result was Ironwood, activated on July 28, 2026. The old Orchard pool went exit-only, funds migrate through a turnstile that enforces the supply cap, and the new pool runs formally verified circuits. It even includes quantum-recoverable notes, a forward-looking touch we unpacked in our quantum-resistant crypto guide. A soundness bug becoming a stronger protocol within 60 days is the kind of response most chains never get tested on.
Why Everyone Wants ZEC Again
Several forces stacked up at once. The delisting wave reversed, with OKX and others relisting ZEC once the rally made privacy coins impossible to ignore. Wall Street arrived through Grayscale’s spot Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca. Prominent Bitcoiners started publicly rotating into ZEC as “private Bitcoin.” We tracked the price side of that story in our ZEC all-time-high analysis.
The ecosystem is expanding beyond payments too. The zkSNARKs blind auction brought NFTs to shielded addresses this September, pulling in $17.5 million and proving demand for private ownership of more than just coins.
Zcash vs Monero: The Eternal Rivalry
The king has exactly one serious challenger. Monero takes the opposite approach: privacy always on, for every transaction, with no transparent option at all. Purists love that, and it’s why XMR survived every delisting wave as the darknet’s coin of choice.
Zcash bet on optional privacy with stronger cryptography, and 2026 is rewarding that bet. The transparent option gave exchanges and the ETF a compliance path Monero can’t offer, while zk-SNARKs deliver a larger anonymity set than Monero’s ring signatures when funds sit shielded. Both projects deserve a deeper head-to-head, and that comparison is coming to the site soon.
How to Get Started with Zcash
Two steps, two guides. Buying is the easy part now that the big exchanges list ZEC again, and our guide on how to buy Zcash walks through every venue by region. Storage matters more here than for any other coin, because the privacy only activates once you withdraw and shield. Our fresh Zcash wallets overview covers every option, from the Zodl mobile app to Ledger’s new shielded hardware support.

Final Words
Back in 2019 we called Zcash the king of anonymous coins on the strength of its science. The market disagreed for six years, and then it very suddenly didn’t. Today the case is stronger than the one we originally made: battle-tested cryptography, decentralized development, an ETF, growing shielded adoption, and a fresh protocol hardened by the Ironwood upgrade.
My own approach stays boring. DCA, no leverage, coins shielded off-exchange. Kings fall in crypto all the time, but this one earned the title twice.

FAQ
What is Zcash in simple terms?
Zcash is a cryptocurrency that works like Bitcoin but adds optional privacy. You can send transparent transactions that anyone can see, or shielded transactions that hide the sender, receiver, and amount using zero-knowledge proofs.
Is Zcash really anonymous?
Shielded transactions are among the most private in crypto, hiding all transaction details on-chain. Transparent transactions offer no privacy at all. Your ZEC is only as anonymous as the address type you use, which is why storing coins shielded matters.
Was Zcash hacked in 2026?
No. Researchers found a serious bug in the Orchard shielded pool in May 2026 before any known exploitation, and the network replaced the entire pool with the hardened Ironwood upgrade in July. User funds were never shown to be affected.
What is the difference between Zcash and Monero?
Monero makes every transaction private with no exceptions, while Zcash makes privacy optional through shielded and transparent addresses. Zcash uses zk-SNARK proofs, Monero uses ring signatures, and Zcash’s transparent option is why exchanges and ETFs can support it more easily.
How much of the ZEC supply is shielded?
Roughly 30% of all ZEC sits in shielded pools as of late 2026, the highest ratio in the network’s history. The share keeps climbing as holders migrate into the new Ironwood pool.
Who controls Zcash now?
No single entity. Development spreads across the Zcash Open Development Lab, Shielded Labs, the Zcash Foundation, and other independent teams since the original Electric Coin Company team departed in early 2026.
