Is Bitcoin the new gold? In my view, it already is digital gold. It’s scarce, it has to be mined and it can’t be copied. The market just hasn’t fully caught up, because Bitcoin still swings far harder than gold when fear hits.
That question got a lot louder this month. A San Francisco startup says it turned mercury into real gold. If that ever scales, nature no longer sets the limit on gold’s supply. Bitcoin’s limit, on the other hand, comes from code.
Below, I break down the lab gold story, where prices stand and why Bitcoin hasn’t acted like gold in 2026. I’ll also share how I look at it after 13 years in Bitcoin.
Is Bitcoin the New Gold? The Short Answer
On fundamentals, Bitcoin already works as digital gold. Its supply stops at 21 million coins. No lab, mine or reactor can add more. Gold, by contrast, now has a supply question mark.
Price action tells a different story, though. When fear hit markets this year, gold held up far better than BTC. Volatility is the one thing that still holds Bitcoin back.
In simple terms, Bitcoin wins on scarcity. Gold still wins on stability.
A Startup Says It Turned Mercury Into Gold
Marathon Fusion is a small San Francisco company founded in 2023. It builds fuel systems for future fusion power plants. In October, the team announced that it had turned mercury into stable gold. According to the company, the test ran in September at ten times the rate of CERN’s record.
The method sounds like science fiction. Fusion reactions fire neutrons at mercury-198. That creates mercury-197, an unstable isotope. Within a few days, it decays into gold-197, the only stable form of gold.
Before you sell your gold bars, read the fine print. Nobody outside the company has checked the claim. Marathon also hasn’t said how much gold it made. For scale, CERN’s collider produced about 29 picograms of gold between 2015 and 2018. Ten times a tiny number is still a tiny number.
Then there’s the bigger problem. No fusion plant sells electricity today, and commercial plants are still years away. On top of that, the gold may come out radioactive. It could need up to 18 years in storage before anyone can sell it.
Why Lab-Made Gold Matters for Bitcoin
So why do Bitcoiners care about a tiny, unverified batch of gold? It’s all about the long run. Marathon’s 2025 study estimated that one fusion plant could make about 5 tonnes of gold a year per gigawatt. A hundred of those plants would add roughly 14% of what mines produced in 2025.
That wouldn’t crash gold overnight. Mines dug up 3,672 tonnes in 2025, and around 222,600 tonnes exist from all of history. Even so, it breaks one of gold’s oldest promises. Nature always capped how much gold the world could get. Now, technology could one day stretch that cap.
Diamonds show how that story can end. Wholesale prices for lab-grown diamonds fell 90 to 95% from their 2015 levels. Gold differs in one key way, however. Once the radiation fades, lab gold is identical to mined gold. Nobody could tell the two apart.
Bitcoin has no such risk. You can’t turn anything into BTC. The 21 million cap lives in the protocol, and a global network of nodes enforces it every day.
This is the real argument behind “Bitcoin is the new gold.” It isn’t about price at all. Instead, it’s about which supply stays fixed no matter what science does next.
Bitcoin vs Gold Price: Where Things Stand Right Now
Here’s the honest scoreboard heading into November 2026:
- Gold: around $4,100 an ounce, more than 25% below its January record of $5,598.
- Bitcoin: around $77,500, roughly 38% below its October 2025 high near $126,000.
- Market cap: Bitcoin sits near $1.56 trillion, about 5% of gold’s roughly $30 trillion.
- Ratio: one bitcoin buys about 19 ounces of gold. At the end of 2024, it bought more than 40.
In other words, both assets trade well off their highs. Bitcoin, however, has lost ground against gold since late 2024.
The long view looks completely different. Over the past ten years, Bitcoin returned roughly 16,350%. Gold returned about 272% over the same stretch. That gap is exactly why the “new gold” question never goes away.

Why Bitcoin Hasn’t Acted Like Gold in 2026
A store of value should hold up when fear hits. This year, Bitcoin mostly didn’t. During the Iran strikes in March, BTC crashed while gold rose. By June, Bitcoin had dropped to around $58,000.
There are three main reasons for this. First, Bitcoin still trades like a risk asset. Big funds dump it together with tech stocks when they cut risk. Second, leverage is everywhere in crypto. Liquidations turn small dips into big ones.
Third, gold has buyers that Bitcoin doesn’t have yet. Central banks keep buying gold in size. Those buyers rarely sell in a panic.
None of this kills the digital gold thesis. It does mean Bitcoin is still earning the title. After all, gold had a few thousand years of head start.
Bitcoin vs Gold Side by Side
- Supply: Bitcoin stops at 21 million. Gold supply grows every year, and labs could add more one day.
- Track record: Gold has stored value for thousands of years. Bitcoin has done it since 2009.
- Volatility: Gold moves slowly. Bitcoin can swing 10% in a single day.
- Portability: You can send Bitcoin anywhere in minutes. Moving gold takes trucks, vaults and insurance.
- Verification: Anyone can check Bitcoin’s supply onchain. Gold needs testing, and fakes exist.
- Crisis behavior: Gold usually rises in a panic. So far, Bitcoin often falls with stocks.
My Take: Bitcoin Is Digital Gold
I’ve seen Bitcoin as digital gold since the early days. I bought my first BTC in 2013, at $44, and that view has never changed.
My reasoning is simple. Bitcoin is scarce, with a hard cap of 21 million coins. Like gold, it has to be mined, just digitally. Miners spend real energy to bring every new coin into the world. On top of that, nobody can copy it. A bitcoin can’t be duplicated, faked or printed out of thin air.
To me, those traits make it a store of value. Lab gold doesn’t change that. If anything, it shows how rare a truly fixed supply is.
The downside is volatility. Bitcoin can drop 30% while gold barely moves. That’s why markets don’t treat it as a safe haven yet. Holding it means sitting through those swings.
Lost coins tighten the supply even more. Back in 2017, I lost the password to a blockchain.info wallet holding 0.44 BTC. Those coins are most likely gone forever, and plenty of others are stuck the same way.
Right now, I’m still buying BTC on a schedule, twice a week. Chasing a price isn’t the plan, since I see it as a long-term hold.

Final Words
Lab-made gold won’t hit the market anytime soon. Even so, it changes the debate. For thousands of years, nature kept gold scarce. Soon, technology might not. Bitcoin’s cap, by contrast, can’t move.
For now, gold still owns the safe-haven trade. Bitcoin owns the scarcity argument. Whichever one wins the next decade, the question “is Bitcoin the new gold?” just got a lot more interesting.

FAQ
Is Bitcoin the new gold?
On fundamentals, yes. Bitcoin is scarce, has to be mined and can’t be copied, which makes it a store of value. The catch is volatility. In 2026, gold held up better during market panics, so it still owns the safe-haven role.
Can lab-made gold crash the gold price?
Not anytime soon. Marathon Fusion’s claim is unverified, the amount produced is unknown and commercial fusion plants are still years away. In the long run, large-scale lab gold could weaken gold’s scarcity, much like lab-grown diamonds did to diamond prices.
Why is Bitcoin called digital gold?
Bitcoin shares gold’s key traits: scarcity, durability and no central issuer. Its supply stops at 21 million coins, and a global network verifies every transaction.
Is Bitcoin or gold a better hedge?
It depends on your timeframe. Gold has been more stable during short-term crises. Bitcoin has delivered far higher returns over the past ten years, but with much bigger swings.
How much gold is one Bitcoin worth?
At the time of writing, one bitcoin buys roughly 19 ounces of gold. At its late 2024 peak, the ratio was above 40 ounces.
