Bitget vs MEXC: Which Exchange Wins After the Bitget Hack?

September 25, 2026
Bitget just lost $350M. MEXC freezes accounts. We compare fees, catalog, copy trading and rewards in 2026 so you know where to trade.

Bitget vs MEXC is the matchup a lot of Bitget traders are running in their heads right now. On September 24, 2026, Bitget confirmed a hack worth around $350 million. The people who trade there tend to skip Binance and Coinbase. They want high leverage, fast listings and light KYC. MEXC is the obvious next door. It has the cheapest fees in crypto and the biggest altcoin catalog, but it carries a risk of its own. This comparison covers fees, security, rewards and who should actually switch.

Quick verdict: MEXC wins on cost and coin selection by a mile. Bitget wins on copy trading and fiat access. Neither is a place to store your savings, and this week proved it twice over. For the deep dives, read our Bitget review and MEXC review.

Fees: MEXC Is Close to Free

Nobody undercuts MEXC. Spot makers pay 0%, and takers pay 0.05%. Futures makers also pay 0%, with takers at 0.01% to 0.02%. Bitget charges 0.10% on both sides of spot, dropping to 0.08% if you pay in BGB. Its futures fees run 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker.

For a limit-order trader, MEXC costs almost nothing. A $10,000 futures taker order costs about $1 to $2 on MEXC and $6 on Bitget. Over a month of active trading, that gap turns into real money. This section isn’t close.

Security: A Hack Versus a Freeze

Bitget’s problem is fresh. An attacker drained its hot and cold wallets across several chains in a few hours. We tracked it in our Bitget hack breakdown. The exchange runs a Protection Fund backed by 5,500 BTC, worth around $351 million in July 2026. CEO Gracy Chen says user funds are not at risk. Before this week, Bitget had never lost user funds to a wallet breach. Its 2025 VOXEL incident came from a trading-bot flaw.

MEXC’s problem is older and different. Its risk-control system freezes accounts, sometimes for months. The 2025 “White Whale” case saw $3.15 million locked up until ZachXBT got involved, and MEXC’s leadership apologized in public. Profitable futures traders at size are exactly the profile that system flags. No hacker is involved, but the effect on you is the same: you can’t get your money out.

Both exchanges hold your keys. Each one has shown a different way that can go wrong. That’s the real lesson here. Our self custody vs exchange guide explains how to keep long-term coins out of reach of either problem.

Catalog and Leverage: MEXC’s Home Turf

MEXC lists everything. With 2,700+ coins across 3,000+ pairs, it’s usually the first CEX to carry a new meme coin or low-cap gem. Bitget’s 1,300+ coins is a solid catalog, but altcoin hunters will find far more on MEXC.

Leverage follows the same pattern. MEXC caps out at 500x, four times Bitget’s 125x. Very few people should use either ceiling. Still, if maximum firepower is your thing, MEXC has it.

Copy Trading and Rewards: Bitget Fights Back

Copy trading is where Bitget earns its reputation. More than 130,000 verified elite traders publish full public stats, and copiers can follow them in spot and futures. MEXC offers copy trading too, but the roster is much thinner.

On rewards, both exchanges run heavy pipelines. Bitget has Launchpool, PoolX and a 6,200 USDT welcome pack. MEXC has Kickstarter and Launchpad airdrops for MX holders, plus regular campaigns with AirdropAlert on our MEXC project page. Call this section a tie on bonuses and a Bitget win on copy trading.

Bitget vs MEXC: Final Words

So, Bitget vs MEXC: who takes it? For pure trading economics, MEXC. Near-zero fees, the biggest catalog and the highest leverage make it the cheaper venue by a wide margin. Bitget keeps the edge for copy traders and anyone who needs fiat rails.

The bigger point sits above both. Bitget just lost $350 million from its own wallets. MEXC has a documented habit of freezing balances. Trade on either one, but don’t store on either one. Keep lean balances, withdraw profits often, and treat any exchange as a trading floor rather than a vault.

FAQ

Is MEXC better than Bitget? For fees, catalog and leverage, yes. Bitget wins on copy trading and fiat access. Both carry counterparty risk, so keep balances lean on either.

Which is cheaper, Bitget or MEXC? MEXC, by a lot. It charges 0% maker on spot and futures, with 0.05% and 0.01–0.02% taker. Bitget charges 0.10%/0.10% on spot and 0.02%/0.06% on futures.

Is MEXC safer than Bitget after the hack? Not really. MEXC hasn’t suffered a major wallet hack, but its risk-control freezes have locked user funds for months. Both are custodial risks of different kinds.

Did Bitget users lose money in the hack? Bitget says no. Its CEO says user funds are safe, and the Protection Fund roughly matches the estimated $350 million loss.
