How to Buy NEAR for the First Time

October 10, 2026
NEAR is one of the coins I have been buying since early August. Here is how to buy it, store it, stake it, and avoid the network mistake

To buy NEAR, create an account on a crypto exchange that lists it, pass the identity check, add funds, and buy on the NEAR/USDT spot market. Expect to spend around fifteen minutes from sign-up to first purchase. NEAR is the native coin of NEAR Protocol, a fast layer 1 blockchain with a strong AI angle. I have been buying it myself since early August, so this guide includes my own approach. You will also learn which network to pick on withdrawal, because that is where beginners lose coins.

NEAR in Plain English

NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake blockchain that went live in 2020. It competes with Ethereum and Solana on speed and cost. Transactions settle within seconds, and fees cost a fraction of a cent. The NEAR coin pays those fees and secures the network through staking.

Two things set the project apart. First, accounts can have readable names, such as yourname.near, instead of long strings of characters. Second, the project leans hard into AI. Co-founder Illia Polosukhin helped write the research paper behind modern AI models. Because of that background, many traders treat NEAR as the leading AI coin among layer 1 chains. Also, note that NEAR has no hard supply cap. Instead, new coins enter circulation each year as staking rewards.

Why NEAR Is on My Shopping List

NEAR is one of the coins I have been buying through this bear market. My first orders filled in early August, and I have added on a schedule since then. The plan gives NEAR 5% of my portfolio. I wanted one AI narrative coin before the next bull run, and this was my pick. You can see the full allocation in my crypto bottom shopping list.

For this position I use dollar-cost averaging, or DCA. That means I buy a fixed amount at set times, regardless of price. As a result, I never need a perfect entry. So far the approach has worked well, although one good stretch proves nothing. Still, I prefer a written plan over chasing green candles.

Step One: Pick Your Exchange

NEAR trades on every major exchange, so the choice comes down to trust and fees. I would start with OKX, which pairs solid NEAR liquidity with a clean app. Bybit comes second on my list, and it is where I do most of my own trading. Read the two reviews if you want the details first. Otherwise, sign up straight through the OKX referral link or the Bybit referral link and collect the welcome bonus.

Other solid options exist as well. Blofin is a smaller exchange with a growing following among active traders. Kraken suits buyers who want an established, regulated brand. Binance lists NEAR too, though it sits at the bottom of my list.

Step Two: Verify and Fund Your Account

Registration takes a minute, but verification comes next. Upload a photo of your ID and a selfie, then wait for approval. Meanwhile, set up two-factor authentication. Once you are approved, deposit money by bank transfer or card. Bank transfers cost less, whereas cards are instant.

Step Three: Buy NEAR

Head to the spot market and type NEAR into the search bar. Then choose the NEAR/USDT pair. A market order fills right away at the current price. However, a limit order waits until the price hits your level. For a first buy, a market order keeps things simple. If you plan to DCA like I do, look for the recurring buy feature. Most large exchanges offer one.

The Withdrawal Mistake to Avoid

Here is the trap that catches new NEAR buyers. Exchanges often offer several networks when you withdraw. Besides the native NEAR network, you may see wrapped versions on BNB Chain or Ethereum. If your wallet only supports native NEAR, the wrong network can strand your coins. Therefore, always select NEAR Protocol as the network for a NEAR wallet. After that, send a small test amount first.

NEAR addresses also look unusual. Some are readable names ending in .near, while others are 64-character strings. Both types are valid. In addition, every account keeps a tiny amount of NEAR locked for storage. So you cannot empty a wallet to zero.

Storing and Staking Your NEAR

For small amounts, the exchange is fine while you learn. Larger holdings, however, belong in your own wallet. Trust Wallet supports NEAR and works well for beginners. Our guide on keeping coins on an exchange or in your own wallet explains the trade-offs.

Holding in your own wallet also unlocks staking. You delegate NEAR to a validator and earn a few percent per year in return. Your coins stay yours, but unstaking takes two to three days. Because of that delay, keep some NEAR liquid if you might sell quickly. Many exchanges offer staking products too, which is easier but adds exchange risk.

NEAR Perps and the Privacy Angle

Spot is the right place to start. Later, you may want to trade NEAR with leverage through perpetual futures. OKX and Bybit both run NEAR perp markets, so you can trade them from the account you already opened. That is the easiest path for most beginners, since your funds are already there. Prefer to trade on-chain instead? Then Hyperliquid lists a NEAR perp as well, and this referral link gets you a fee discount. NEAR itself has also entered this arena. In September, the project launched confidential perps, which hide your positions from public view. I covered that launch in my post on NEAR confidential perps. Nevertheless, leverage magnifies losses as much as gains, so treat it as an advanced tool.

Where NEAR Is Available

Availability is rarely the issue with NEAR. The right platform, however, changes by country.

United States

American buyers can get NEAR on the main regulated platforms. See which one fits in our guide to US crypto exchanges.

Europe

Most MiCA-licensed exchanges offer NEAR to European customers. We compare them in the best exchanges for Europe.

Latin America

Deposit options in local currency vary a lot across this region. Because of that, the LATAM exchange picks focus on local payment rails.

East Asia

Licensing differs between Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Our East Asia exchange guide covers each market separately.

India

Indian buyers face tax rules that affect every single trade. So compare platforms in the India exchange rankings first.

Final Words

Buying NEAR is simple once you know the steps. Choose a trusted exchange, buy on the spot market, and double-check the network before any withdrawal. After that, decide on a plan. Mine is slow, scheduled buying, and I intend to stick with it until the plan says otherwise.

FAQ

Which exchanges list NEAR?

Almost every major exchange does. OKX, Bybit, Blofin, Kraken, and Binance all list it. You can also buy NEAR on MEXC, Bitget, Bitunix, and Coinbase.

Can I stake NEAR?

Yes. Delegate to a validator from your own wallet and earn a few percent per year. However, unstaking takes two to three days.

Does NEAR have a maximum supply?

No. NEAR has no hard cap, and new coins are issued as staking rewards. However, part of every transaction fee is burned, which offsets some of that inflation.

Which network should I use to withdraw NEAR?

Choose the native NEAR Protocol network, unless your wallet clearly supports a wrapped version. When in doubt, send a small test first.

Is NEAR an AI coin?

Partly. NEAR is a general-purpose blockchain, but its team has deep AI roots and builds AI-focused tools. For that reason, the market often groups it with AI coins.

How much money do I need to start?

Very little. Minimum orders on most exchanges sit around a few dollars, so you can test the process with a small amount.
