Hyperliquid vs Aster: The King and the Challenger

October 13, 2026
Aster was called the Hyperliquid killer. A year later, we compare both perp DEXs on liquidity, features, tokens and risk.

When Aster launched its token in September 2025, crypto Twitter crowned it the Hyperliquid killer. For a few weeks, it even topped the daily fee charts. A year later, the dust has settled. Hyperliquid still rules on-chain perps, while Aster has carved out its own lane with extreme leverage, hidden orders and Binance-world backing.

This Hyperliquid vs Aster comparison looks at where each one actually wins. We cover fees, liquidity, technology, markets, token models, airdrops and the risks that come with each.

The Bottom Line First

Hyperliquid is the better perp DEX for serious traders, with far deeper liquidity, transparent on-chain data and the largest market selection in DeFi. Aster suits traders who want features Hyperliquid doesn’t offer, like 1001x leverage, hidden orders and multichain access without bridging. Use Hyperliquid for size. Use Aster for niche setups and ASTER farming.

Both platforms have their own deep dives on the site. Start with our Hyperliquid review, then read our Aster review. This post sticks to the direct matchup.

Fees Compared

Neither platform trades for free. Hyperliquid’s base tier costs 0.045% per taker order and 0.015% per maker order. Higher volume, HYPE staking and referral codes cut those rates.

Aster also charges maker and taker fees, and holding ASTER lowers them. At base levels, the two land in a similar range. Neither undercuts the other enough to make fees your deciding factor.

Your real cost usually hides elsewhere. On thinner books, spread and slippage can outweigh a few basis points of fee savings. That brings us to the biggest gap between these two.

Edge: roughly even.

Liquidity: Where the Gap Shows

Hyperliquid handled about $239 billion in perp volume over 30 days as of mid-September 2026. It often holds more open interest than the next nine DEXs combined. Its TVL runs into the billions.

Aster’s numbers look impressive on its own dashboard, with trillions in cumulative volume claimed. Independent data paints a smaller picture. Its TVL sits around $800 million, and activity dropped sharply each time reward programs tightened. That pattern suggests a big share of past volume came from farming.

For small trades, you won’t notice much difference. Once you push five or six figures, Hyperliquid’s depth gives you noticeably better fills.

Edge: Hyperliquid, by a mile.

Two Chains, Two Philosophies

Hyperliquid built everything on its own Layer 1. HyperCore runs the order book, while HyperEVM hosts smart contracts and a growing DeFi scene. Every position, liquidation and whale trade sits in plain view on-chain. That openness made Hyperliquid famous, since anyone can watch big traders in real time.

Aster started life spread across BNB Chain, Ethereum, Arbitrum and other networks. In March 2026, it launched Aster Chain, a Layer 1 designed for private, high-speed derivatives. Privacy is the core of its pitch. Hidden orders keep your limit orders invisible, so nobody can hunt your stops.

So which approach is better? It depends on your style. Transparency builds trust and lets you study the market. Privacy protects large or sensitive positions from front-running.

Edge: personal preference.

Markets, Leverage and Privacy

Hyperliquid lists hundreds of perp markets plus spot. Through HIP-3, builders launched perps on stocks, indices and commodities, now a major chunk of its activity. Kraken’s parent Payward even announced plans to deploy perps on Hyperliquid for eligible US clients. Vaults and HyperEVM apps round out the ecosystem.

Aster brings a different toolkit. Pro Mode offers leverage up to 1001x on select pairs. Simple Mode gives one-click, MEV-resistant execution. Stock perps, hidden orders and Aster Earn products like asBNB and USDF complete the lineup.

That 1001x deserves a warning. At that leverage, a 0.1% price move liquidates your entire position. Hyperliquid’s 40x cap already gives most traders more than enough rope.

Edge: Hyperliquid for breadth, Aster for unusual features.

HYPE vs ASTER: Buybacks and Airdrops

Here the two look surprisingly alike. Hyperliquid sends nearly all trading fees to its Assistance Fund, which buys HYPE on the open market. Since June 2026, Aster uses 99% of daily fees to buy ASTER and hand it to veASTER stakers. Both tokens depend directly on how much their exchange trades.

Both also launched with generous airdrops. Hyperliquid’s Genesis drop in November 2024 gave away 31% of HYPE supply and set the standard for the industry. Aster ran multiple reward stages around its September 2025 launch, with more than half of ASTER supply set aside for airdrops.

What’s next? Hyperliquid has never confirmed another season, yet the community keeps positioning for one. Our Hyperliquid Season 3 airdrop tracker follows the speculation. Aster keeps running campaigns, and our Aster project page lists every new one.

Supply is worth watching on both sides. HYPE faces ongoing team unlocks, and ASTER’s team allocation left its 12-month cliff in September 2026. Farmers who want exposure to both programs without betting on price often hedge across the two venues. Our delta-neutral farming guide explains how that works.

Edge: draw.

Binance Backing: Strength or Risk?

Aster doesn’t hide its connections. YZi Labs, CZ’s family office, owns a stake, and CZ has promoted the platform publicly. That relationship gives Aster reach across the BNB ecosystem.

It also ties Aster to Binance’s fortunes. The October 10 crash of 2025 showed how fast that world can break, with record liquidations and Binance at the center. Our breakdown of the Binance 10/10 crash covers the full story.

Hyperliquid stands on its own. It raised no venture money and answers to no exchange giant. It has faced its own tests, though, including validator interventions during market incidents. Independence doesn’t mean zero risk.

Final Words

Aster never killed Hyperliquid, but it didn’t need to. Hyperliquid remains the deepest, most transparent venue in on-chain perps. Aster offers privacy, extreme leverage and multichain reach, with Binance-world ties attached. For your main account, Hyperliquid is the safer bet.

FAQ

Is Aster bigger than Hyperliquid?
No. Hyperliquid trades far more volume, holds far more open interest and has a much larger TVL. Aster briefly led daily fee charts after its 2025 token launch, but that lead didn’t last.

Which has lower fees, Hyperliquid or Aster?
They land in a similar range at base tiers. Hyperliquid’s deeper liquidity usually means lower total costs on larger trades, thanks to tighter spreads.

Can you trade stocks on Hyperliquid and Aster?
Yes, both offer stock perps. Hyperliquid lists them through HIP-3 builder markets, while Aster runs its own stock perp markets.

Why does Aster offer 1001x leverage?
It’s a marketing hook and a niche tool for very short-term trades. At 1001x, a 0.1% move against you wipes out the position.

Can I farm Hyperliquid and Aster airdrops at the same time?
Yes. Many farmers trade both, often hedging positions across the two. Neither platform guarantees a future airdrop.
