Trump’s “Annihilate Iran” Threat: Crypto Knee-Jerks, Then Settles

September 20, 2026
War tweets flooded the timeline, but Bitcoin reclaimed $80K anyway. The weekly candle close tonight decides which side won the week

President Trump told Axios on Thursday that he is close to a “big decision” on whether to “annihilate” the Iranian regime. One day later, US embassies across nine Middle East countries issued security alerts for Americans. Crypto Twitter spent the night trading screenshots and war predictions. The market itself did what it always does with these headlines lately: a knee-jerk dip, followed by a shrug. Bitcoin sits around $81,000 going into tonight’s weekly candle close, well above where the week opened.

Here is what actually happened, and why the candle that prints tonight matters more than the tweets.

What Trump Said, and Why the Timeline Blew Up

The quote doing the rounds came from an Axios interview. Trump called a possible major assault on Iran a “big decision” and added that “anything could happen with me.” He drops that line days before meeting leaders from all six Gulf states on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

The embassy alerts poured fuel on it. US embassies in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, Bahrain, the UAE and Qatar all told Americans to stay vigilant on the same day. Add a tanker getting hit in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, plus a Houthi ballistic missile intercepted over Riyadh, and you have a perfect recipe for “WW3 tonight” posts.

Worth noting what the doomposters left out. Trump also said this week that Iran wants to “make a deal” and that we are hopefully near the end of the war. He talks escalation and de-escalation in the same breath, often on the same day. The market has learned to price the noise accordingly.

The Knee-Jerk Reaction

The dip came fast and left just as fast. Bitcoin had already been smacked down early in the week, wicking below $75,000 after the Clarity Act failure in the Senate. The war headlines added a second scare on top. Neither one stuck.

By Friday, Bitcoin had reclaimed $80,000 and pushed toward $81,000, a level we broke down in our latest Bitcoin $80K blog. ETH climbed back above $2,500. SOL ripped almost 8% in a day to reclaim $106. That is not what panic looks like. September is historically Bitcoin’s worst month, and it is currently green on the month anyway.

My read: after seven months of this war, geopolitical headlines have lost most of their teeth. The first strikes in February nuked the market. Every escalation since has produced smaller and shorter dips. Traders now sell the headline and buy back within 48 hours. The real transmission channel is oil. Brent above $105 keeps inflation sticky, which is exactly why we got the Fed’s first rate hike since 2023 on Wednesday. That is the macro pressure that matters, not a tweet screenshot at 2 AM.

All Eyes on the Weekly Candle Close

Tonight is the interesting part. The weekly candle closes at midnight UTC, and this one tells a story. The week opened near $78,000, swept the lows below $75,000 on Tuesday, and now trades around $81,000. If Bitcoin holds here, we print a green weekly candle with a long bottom wick. Chart traders call that a sweep and reclaim, and it is one of the more bullish weekly structures you can ask for in a nervous market.

A close back under $78,000 would flip that read. It would mean the bounce was a dead cat and sellers used the recovery to exit. I wrote about the levels that matter for Bitcoin around Fed decisions in my Bitcoin and the Fed breakdown, and the logic still applies: closes matter, wicks lie.

Catching knives against war headlines on a Sunday night is not a trade, it is a coin flip with extra steps. The plan is simple: let the candle close, see how Tuesday’s Gulf meeting lands, then act. What It Means for My Positions

Full transparency on how I traded this week, starting with the leverage side. My PEPE long, the same coin we recently ranked in our best Ethereum meme coins list, was up 80% at its peak. Three take-profit orders filled on the way up, banking roughly 40% of the move. After that, I trailed my stop into the profit zone, and the war dip took me out. Getting stopped out never feels great, but a trade that closes north of 50% is a trade I will take every week.

On the spot side, I keep holding CATE, which I entered around an $82M market cap. It topped near $120M yesterday before pulling back into the $100M range. Not selling. Onchain plays care less about macro than majors do. The pullbacks are hefty, but the pumps are just as vicious. In my eyes, CATE has the potential to be that first $1B meme of the upcoming cycle. So let’s see how this one plays out.

For majors, nothing changes: I keep DCAing my regulars, BTC, SOL, HYPE, ZEC and NEAR. Zero leverage positions open right now. I was eyeing the 82.8K to 84K range on Bitcoin for a potential short, but we never got there. On Solana, the $106 range interests me for a potential swing long. Whether I actually pull the trigger depends on the circumstances once price arrives at those levels. That is exactly why we publish our trading fundamentals guides on order flow, volume and market structure: the level gets you watching, the context gets you filled.

Final Words

Nothing in this weekend’s news forces a trade. Trump threatens annihilation and offers a deal in the same week, the market dips and recovers in the same week, and the weekly candle will tell us which side actually won. Until Tuesday’s meeting in New York, everything else is noise.

One thing I will say for the man: Trump does love to stir the pot on weekends. Stocks get to close on Friday and sleep through the drama. Crypto trades 24/7, so we get the full show live, every single Saturday night. If he could schedule his “big decisions” for a Tuesday morning instead, my Sundays would look a lot healthier.

FAQ

What did Trump say about Iran?

He told Axios he is close to a “big decision” on whether to launch a major assault to “annihilate” the Iranian regime, adding that “anything could happen.” He made the comments days before meeting Gulf leaders at the UN General Assembly.

Why did crypto dip this week?

Two hits. The Clarity Act failed its Senate vote on Tuesday, wicking Bitcoin below $75,000. Trump’s Iran threat and the embassy security alerts added a second scare late in the week. Both dips got bought.

When does the weekly candle close?

Sunday at midnight UTC, which is when the new weekly candle opens on Monday. Most traders treat this close as the most important one of the week.

Is the Iran war bad for Bitcoin?

Escalation headlines cause short-term dips, but the effect has shrunk with every round since February. The bigger drag is indirect: expensive oil keeps inflation high, which keeps the Fed hawkish, which pressures all risk assets including crypto.

What happens on Tuesday?

Trump meets leaders or foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman in New York to discuss next steps in the war, including a possible postwar plan. Any concrete outcome, in either direction, is a volatility event.
