Solana Rent Refund

A Solana Rent Refund with a $360M Airdrop is making headlines after a new Solana upgrade started freeing $SOL that was previously needed to keep on-chain accounts open. The change is called SIMD-0437, and its first stage is already live. As Solana gradually cuts account storage requirements by up to 90%, some wallets can recover excess $SOL from accounts they created through past activity.

🪂 Check Your Solana Wallet for Reclaimable $SOL

If you have used Solana before, your wallet may have $SOL that can now be recovered.

Using Solana creates small on-chain accounts for tokens and other blockchain activity. These accounts need to keep a minimum amount of $SOL as a refundable storage deposit. Solana calls this “rent”, although it works more like a refundable bond than a fee.

Following the first stage of SIMD-0437 and Solana’s Reduced Rent upgrade, that requirement fell from 6,960 to 6,333 lamports per byte, about a 9% reduction. The five-stage rollout ultimately targets 696 lamports per byte, cutting the previous requirement by 90%.

Older accounts may therefore hold more $SOL than they need today.

That extra $SOL can be withdrawn from supported accounts and returned to your wallet. You do not necessarily need to close the account or move the tokens held there. Solana’s official How to Reclaim Excess SOL After Rent Reduction guide explains how WithdrawExcessLamports removes the surplus while leaving the account open and its token balance untouched.

Not every Solana wallet will have $SOL to reclaim. Your amount depends on which on-chain accounts your wallet controls and whether they currently hold more $SOL than the new minimum.

People who have traded tokens, used DeFi, collected NFTs, played Solana games or interacted with many apps may have more accounts worth checking than someone who only created a wallet and held $SOL.

The “$360M airdrop” buzz comes from estimates that around 3.4M $SOL will be freed across Solana as all five rent cuts activate. Stage 1 is already live, and each later phase will lower the rent requirement further, unlocking more $SOL from funded accounts.

Step by step guide Solana Rent Refund

  1. Check whether your accounts have excess $SOL

Start with Solana’s official How to Reclaim Excess SOL After Rent Reduction guide to understand how the reclaim works.

→ The official guide is mainly written for wallet providers, utility services and developers, rather than as a one-click consumer claim page.

→ It explains how supported token accounts, mints and multisigs can use WithdrawExcessLamports to recover $SOL sitting above the current rent-exempt minimum without closing the account.

💡 Want an easier option? Overfunded is a third-party, open-source tool that scans your Solana token accounts for excess rent. Its Keep Open mode shows the eligible accounts, reclaimable $SOL, receiving wallet and fees before preparing the transaction. It currently charges a 5% service fee on successfully recovered $SOL. Overfunded is not an official Solana tool, so review the transaction details before signing.

  2. Reclaim your excess $SOL

Select the eligible accounts and claim the excess $SOL back to your wallet.

WithdrawExcessLamports takes only the $SOL above the current rent requirement. The account stays open and the tokens remain untouched.

→ With Overfunded, connect your wallet, scan your accounts, choose what you want to reclaim, check the receiving amount and fees, then approve the transaction in your wallet.

💡 You may see a much larger amount on Sol Incinerator. Its Claim $SOL feature can also recover the larger rent deposits sitting in old empty token accounts by closing those accounts, and Fun Mode can include eligible pump.fun rewards. The new SIMD-0437 refund is different: it withdraws only the excess rent while keeping supported accounts open.

For comparison, a standard empty token account currently holds about 0.00204 $SOL that can be returned when the account is closed, while the first SIMD-0437 stage creates only about 0.00018 $SOL of new excess rent for a standard legacy-funded token account. That is why Sol Incinerator can show considerably more $SOL to claim.

  3. Check again after future rent reductions

Today’s reclaimable $SOL may not be your final amount.

→ Stage 1 cut the rent requirement by about 9%, while the complete SIMD-0437 rollout targets 90%.

→ Stage 2 is already live on testnet, while the remaining stages are planned through the later rollout. Each new reduction can create additional excess $SOL in previously funded accounts.

💡 There is currently no announced SIMD-0437 claim deadline. The rent reduction is a protocol change, so it is worth checking again as later stages activate.

  4. Explore More Solana Opportunities

After checking your wallet, see which Solana opportunities are active right now.

→ Browse the latest Solana airdrops on AirdropAlert to find active opportunities across gaming, DeFi, trading, social, DePIN and more across the Solana ecosystem.

→ Already holding $SOL? Check the Solana staking guide to see how you can earn staking rewards on your $SOL, including native staking and liquid staking options.

💡 Solana has also approved a faster reduction in future $SOL emissions through SGP-0002, doubling the annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%. Once the related technical change is activated on mainnet, inflation-funded staking rewards are expected to decline faster.
