Gate.com Review: 3,600 Coins, Low Fees, and a Few Scars

October 19, 2026
The widest coin list in crypto, low futures fees, and a hack in its past. Our honest look at Gate.com, formerly Gate.io.

Is Gate.com legit? Yes. This Gate.com review finds a 13-year-old exchange with the widest coin list in crypto and public proof of reserves. The trade-offs are heavy complexity, limited US access, and a past that includes one serious hack.

If you still know it as Gate.io, nothing is wrong with your memory. The exchange moved to the Gate.com domain in 2025. Same company, new name.

What Is Gate.com?

Gate started in 2013 under the name Bter. Founder Lin Han still runs it today. The platform rebranded to Gate.io in 2017, then to Gate.com in 2025.

Over those years it became the go-to venue for small caps. Spot, futures, options, copy trading, bots, and an earn suite all live under one login. A Web3 portal adds onchain perps and Gate Fun, its meme launch hub.

You may also know the logo from sports. Gate sponsors Oracle Red Bull Racing in Formula 1 and Inter Milan in football.

Coin Selection: The Main Reason to Sign Up

No major exchange lists more. Gate carries over 3,600 coins, against a few hundred on most rivals. New narratives usually appear here weeks before the bigger names pick them up.

We saw that play out recently. Gate was early with perps on the cat coin from our CATE breakdown.

That speed cuts both ways. Thin order books and dead projects sit next to the winners. Always check liquidity before you size a position.

Some coins never reach any exchange at all. For those, an onchain app is the better route, which is why our FOMO app review exists.

Gate.com Fees

Costs are mid-range at the base tier and cheap once discounts apply.

Spot Fees

Entry-level spot trading starts around 0.1% maker and 0.2% taker. Paying fees in GT lowers that further. A 17-step VIP ladder cuts rates again, based on volume or GT holdings. At the top, makers pay nothing.

Futures Fees

Perpetuals start at 0.015% maker and 0.05% taker. Those numbers match the big derivatives venues. Leverage is high, so the fee is rarely your biggest risk.

Deposits and Withdrawals

Crypto deposits are free. Withdrawals carry a fixed fee per coin and network, so pick the cheapest chain available. Fiat comes in through cards, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and P2P.

GT Token and Gate Layer

GT is the exchange token. Holders get fee discounts, faster VIP upgrades, and access to token sales.

In 2025, the company added Gate Layer, its own Layer 2 network. GT pays the gas there. That gives the token a job beyond discounts, similar to what BNB does for Binance.

Treat GT as a bet on the exchange itself. Its value rises and falls with Gate’s business.

Earning, Launchpad and Airdrops

Gate pushes rewards harder than most. Launchpad sells early-stage tokens. Launchpool and HODLer airdrops pay users for staking or simply holding GT. Premarket lets you trade coins before their official listing.

New accounts also get a sign-up package. We keep the current offer updated on our Gate welcome bonus page.

Simple Earn, staking, and dual investment cover the passive side. Read the lock-up terms first, because several products freeze your coins.

Is Gate.com Safe?

Transparency is the strong point. Gate publishes proof of reserves every month with cryptographic verification. The August 2026 report showed about $8.2 billion in reserves at a 127% ratio. A SAFU fund sits on top of that.

History is less clean. In 2015, predecessor Bter lost roughly 7,170 BTC from cold storage. In 2019, an Ethereum Classic 51% attack hit the exchange, and Gate covered user losses itself.

Since then, no major breach has been confirmed. Even so, an exchange is never a vault. Our guide on holding your own keys versus trusting an exchange explains how to split your funds.

Where Can You Use Gate.com?

Most of the world can sign up, and KYC is required for full access. Europe is served through a licensed EU entity.

Americans face limits. The main platform restricts US residents, while a separate Gate US entity offers a smaller product set. Check your country in the app before you deposit.

Gate.com Alternatives

The closest rival on small caps is covered in our MEXC review. For a stronger all-round platform with fewer coins, see the OKX review.

Bitget competes on copy trading, and our Bitget review includes the recent hack. Liquidity on majors is still best at the market leader, detailed in the Binance review.

Final Words

Gate.com does one thing better than anyone: listing coins early. Add solid fees and open reserve reports, and it earns a place as a second exchange.

It is not a first exchange for beginners. The menu is huge, and the small caps can burn you quickly.
